Leaving home and starting college is a big step for everyone. There are so many things to think about that it’s too easy to put your health on the back burner. You’ve got exams, papers and let’s not forget that important social life you need to maintain. However, not caring for your health and wellness can have catastrophic results. It will be easy for an illness to catch hold, and before you know it, you’ll be back at home, missing out on lessons and trying to recuperate. Health care and physical activities are provided at most colleges, but there are some things you will need to look after yourself.

Eat Smart

Healthy eating should be at the top of your list of priorities. Your brain is going to need all the right food to function effectively. You can’t live off snack food and takeaways. Your diet must be balanced with various fruit, vegetables, dairy products, grains, nuts and oily fish. If you’re lucky, the college dining hall will be able to provide much of your nutrition, so don’t be tempted to skip meals. As well as eating healthy, you can also take advantage of various available supplements to buy online.

Exercise Whenever Possible

This might not be easy if you have a busy schedule, but you should do your utmost to find the time for exercise. For a start, you can walk to class. If the campus is big, this could add 20 minutes of exercise to your day and keep balance between diet and health. There should also be fitness classes offered and a variety of different sports programs. If there’s a gym in the town, you may also be entitled to a reduced membership.

Sleep is Important

If you’ve got an exam coming up, don’t be tempted to pull an all-nighter, as it really is counter-productive. Staying up with friends until 5 in the morning is also not advisable regularly. Not getting enough sleep can impact your studies because your brain will not function correctly, you’ll feel fatigued, suffer from headaches and could even lose or gain weight. When you’re at college, the ideal amount of sleep is between seven and nine hours. Try and get this much, and you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes. Various things will help you get a good night’s sleep, such as short naps during the day, sleeping in a dark and quiet room and avoiding caffeine and sugary drinks before bed.

Going to college is meant to be a fulfilling and exciting time. It can have its ups and downs, as with anything new that you do. Taking care of yourself is important and will ensure you enjoy college life fully. Eating properly, sleeping well and exercising are also good habits to form for the future. All three factors will greatly impact your well-being for many years to come.
